The 2006 festival program brought together a tantalizing mix of performances, workshops, and tours, plus artisan demonstrations, children's activities, special events, and more.

Friday Night

5:00-7:00: International Soup and Chowder Fest

Newmarket's favorite chefs serve up a taste of our community heritage: New England fish chowder, corn chowder, French pea soup, and more. Cost: Adults, $7; children, $3.50. Proceeds to benefit the Newmarket Main Street Corporation, producers of the Newmarket Heritage Festival. Main tent.
 

7:00-7:15: Heritage Festival Opening Ceremonies

The Newmarket Main Street Corporation honors this year’s Keeper of the Heritage and celebrates the start of the ninth annual Newmarket Heritage Festival. Main tent.
 

7:15-8:30: The Funky Divas of Gospel

They’re back! Don’t miss this hand-clapping, toe-tapping kick-off to the 2006 Newmarket Heritage Festival. Main tent.
 

9:00-11:00: The Serfs at the Stone Church

The night’s not over yet! Head up Zion’s hill, just a five-minute walk from the festival’s main stage and step inside the historic Stone Church. Listen to the sounds of Gary Sredzienski, his accordion, and his rockin’ band, The Serfs. Free with a Heritage Festival button. Stone Church.

9:30-11:00: Club Chameleon Pancake Breakfast

Pancakes, pancakes everywhere! Top ‘em with syrup, strawberries, chocolate chips, whipped cream, and more. All you can eat. Cost: Adults, $6; Children 3-12, $4; under 3, free. Proceeds to benefit Newmarket Recreation Department’s Club Chameleon. Main tent.

11:00-11:45: Try it! African Drumming Workshop

Join the Black Bear Moon Rhythm Ensemble for a West African drumming workshop (16 drums available). Workshop tent.
 

11:00-12:00: A Look Back: Newmarket in Pictures

Take a visual trip into Newmarket’s past with Newmarket Historical Society president Rich Alperin, who presents a slide show collection of hundreds of historic post cards. Community Church sanctuary.
 

11:45-12:30: The World of the Accordion

Accordion warrior Gary Sredzienski takes the stage—along with some of his 40 accordions—to play traditional music and more! Main tent.
 

12:00-1:00: Mill Tour

Enjoy a guided walk through Newmarket's hard-working past—and its developing future—with guide Mike Provost, a third-generation mill worker. Meet at the Eagles building.
 

12:30-1:15: Try it! Accordion Workshop

Meet the accordions! Try one out! Learn more about old world music with Gary. And don’t forget to bring the kids. Main tent.
 

1:00-2:00: Downtown Village Tour

Discover the history and architecture of Newmarket's village area with long-time resident Forbes Getchell. Meet at the Community Church.
 

1:15-2:00: Polish Cooking Demo

Newmarket native Jay Jablonski makes pierogies. Workshop tent.
 

2:00-2:45: Black Bear Moon Rhythm Ensemble

The rhythm of the drums and the melody of the African flute return to the festival stage with Dave Kobrenski and friends, as they share the music of Guinea West Africa. Main tent.
 

2:00-3:00: Cheswell Burying Ground Tour

Meet Wentworth Cheswell (1746–1817), one of Newmarket's founding fathers. Of African-American ancestry, he served the town for more than 50 years. Tour guide Rich Alperin, Newmarket Historical Society president, lives on the site of the Cheswell family home. Meet at the Town Hall.
 

2:45-3:15: Try it! African Dance Workshop

Join the Black Bear Moon Rhythm Ensemble for a West African dance workshop. Workshop tent.
 

3:15-4:00: Blue Hill Brass Quintet

Five centuries of great music—played by five great musicians who have been playing together for 20 years. Don’t miss the fun. (Catch a sneak preview of the quintet as the stroll the festival grounds from 1-3 pm.) Main tent.
 

3:15-4:00: Decoys of New England and their Masters

Wildfowl carver Fred Dolan and his wife Linda present the history and art form of the decoy in a slide presentation, highlighting the New England Masters and tracing the decoy from its utilitarian role to its place on the mantel. Community Church sanctuary.
 

4:00: Children's Tent Closes

 

4:00-4:30: Irish Dance Demonstration

Dancers from the Murray Irish Dance Academy in Stratham perform team dances and award-winning championship routines from the Irish tradition. Includes both soft shoe routines by younger children and hard shoe routines by more experienced dancers. Workshop tent.
 

4:30-5:30: Traditional New England and French Canadian Music

Seacoast favorites Susie Burke and David Surette perform traditional New England and French-Canadian music on guitar, mandolin, and more. Songs, ballads, jigs, and reels—great music for all ages. Main tent.
 

5:30-6:00: Try it! Irish Dance Workshop

Instructor Anne Murray MacRitchie from the Murray Irish Dance Academy and her students demonstrate some basic Irish dance steps—and then teach you how to kick up your heels. Give it a try! Workshop tent.
 

6:00-7:00: King Ludwig’s Bavarian Band

They’re back! King Ludwig’s Bavarian Band returns with their eight-foot alpine horns, yodeling, cow bells, and their favorite jokes. Fun for all ages. (Catch a sneak preview of King Ludwig and his band as they stroll the festival grounds from 4-5 pm.) Main tent.
 

6:00-7:00: Saturday Night Supper Sampler

"Eat out" at the Heritage Festival! Visit our vendors for a selection of great eats. Then enjoy your supper— and the music of King Ludwig’s band—under the main tent. You’ll laugh, you’ll sing, you’ll polka—you’ll hardly have time to eat. (Tables provided around the perimeter of the dance floor.) Main tent.

6:30-7:30: Harpsichord Concert with R. P. Hale

Interdisciplinary artist R.P. Hale dons period costume to present a selection of music on the harpsichord from the Mexican Baroque era. Come listen and learn about this little-known era from a fifth-generation musician and builder of early keyboard instruments. Community Church sanctuary.
 

7:00-7:30: Try it! Swing Dance Workshop

Learn a simple swing step so you’ll be ready to try it out to the music of the Little Swing Band, up next in the main tent. Instructors Morry and Nina El-Badry of Seacoast Swing will get you up and dancing. Don’t miss the fun. Workshop tent.
 

7:00-9:00: Best Dessert of the Seacoast Bake-Off!

Sample an amazing array of delectable treats brought to you by seacoast area eateries, organizations, and local chefs. Celebrity and food judges will award prizes to the most delicious entries. (Gift certificates will also be raffled during the evening.) Bon appetit! Cost: $5. Children 3-12: $2.50; under 3, free. All you can eat. Proceeds to benefit Project Graduation. Workshop tent.
 

7:30-9:30 Little Swing Band

Don’t miss the festival’s annual Saturday night dance party, featuring the music of the 15-piece Little Swing Band. They play all the Big Band favorites, including Ellington, Basie and Goodman. Want to learn more? Dance instructors will be available on the floor throughout the evening. Put on your dancing shoes—or just wear your sneakers. Fun for all ages! Main tent.

10:00-11:00: Community Church Service

All are welcome to attend the weekly church service at Newmarket’s historic Community Church. Service includes music by the Community Church Choir, which recently released its first CD. Community Church sanctuary.
 

11:00-12:15: Extreme Air Sunday Brunch

Everybody’s favorite Sunday brunch returns! Featuring quiche and pancakes, bacon and sausage, muffins and more! Cost: Adults, $6; Children 3-12, $4; under 3, free. Proceeds to benefit Extreme Air, New Hampshire's competition jump rope team. Main tent.
 

11:00-12:00: Downtown Village Tour

11:15-11:45: Extreme Air Jump Rope Team Demo

The competition jumpers who represent the Granite State at the USA Jump Rope National Championships bring their award-winning talents to the festival: single-rope, pairs, and double-dutch freestyle routines, and more! Watch and be amazed! Workshop tent.

This 200-voice women's chorus sings a rich mix of soulful music representing many cultural and musical traditions. From African-American spirituals to Korean songs for unity, South African anti-apartheid songs to Macedonian love songs, these songs offer powerful testament to the triumph of the human spirit. Main tent.
 

1:15-2:00: Laotian Cooking Demonstration

Join Newmarket resident Phonphet Bounphakhom for a demonstration of how to create a favorite traditional Laotian appetizer: fresh spring rolls, accompanied by a sweet and sour sauce. Workshop tent.
 

1:30-2:30: Mill Tour

Enjoy a guided walk through Newmarket's hard-working past—and its developing future—with guide Mike Provost, a third-generation mill worker. Meet at the Eagles building.
 

2:00-2:45: Martha Dana and Friends

The Seacoast’s favorite puppets entertain with stories the whole family will love. Main stage.
 

2:00-3:45: The Spoken Word: A Celebration of Poetry and Prose

Join Mimi White, Portsmouth Poet Laureate, and New Hampshire humorist Rebecca Rule—along with other Seacoast area writers—for an afternoon of original literary arts. Presented in collaboration with the Lamprey Arts and Culture Alliance. Community Church Sanctuary.
 

2:45-3:30: Barbershop Harmonies: A Sneak Preview!

The strolling barbershop quartets stop by the workshop tent for a feast of four-part harmony singing like you’ve never heard before. (The full chorus will perform under the main tent at 4:45.) Workshop tent.
 

3:30-4:15: Newmarket Musical Medley

Newmarket’s Elementary School chorus and band perform music from around the world. Main tent.

4:15-4:45: Parade and Presentation of the Giant Festival Puppets

Celebrate the creativity of community art! Giant puppets, straight from the festival children’s tent, were created during the weekend by scores of Newmarket children (and a few adults, too) working together under the guidance of artists Patricia Kaufman and Jean Husby. Meet the artists. Learn how it was done. See the astonishing results! Workshop tent.
 

4:45-5:45: The Granite Statesmen

Back by popular demand, this internationally acclaimed, 60-voice barbershop chorus closes the Heritage Festival with a program of Broadway tunes and American favorites. (For a sneak preview, listen for the strolling barbershop quartets on the festival grounds from 1-4 pm.) Main tent.

5:30-7:00 Community Church Harvest Supper

Gather with friends and neighbors for a turkey dinner—with all the fixin's. (To-go meals also available.) Donations accepted. Proceeds to benefit the Community Church. Church vestry.
