5:00-7:00: International Soup and Chowder Fest
Newmarket's favorite chefs serve up a taste of our community
heritage: New England fish chowder, corn chowder, French pea soup,
and more. Cost: Adults, $7; children, $3.50. Proceeds to benefit
the Newmarket Main Street Corporation, producers of the Newmarket
Heritage Festival. Main tent.
6:30-7:00: Smoked Kielbasa Emergency Polka Unit
This Polish music band spices up the soup and chowder fest with
music of the old country—traditional village dance music, polkas,
tangos, waltzes, and more. Main tent.

7:00-7:30: Heritage Festival Opening Ceremonies
The Newmarket Main Street Corporation honors this year’s Keeper of
the Heritage and celebrates the start of the eighth annual Newmarket

Take a visual trip into Newmarket’s historic past with Newmarket
Historical Society president Rich Alperin, who presents a slide show
collection of hundreds of historic post cards. Community Church

11:00-11:30: Try it! African Drumming Workshop
Join the Black Bear Moon Rhythm Ensemble for a West African drumming
workshop (16 drums available). Workshop tent.
11:30-12:00: Amazing Feets!
French Canadian step dancer and clogger Ann Whiting kicks up her
heels, accompanied by her high-energy band, Fresh Blend. Main
tent.

Discover the history and architecture of Newmarket's village area
with long-time resident Phil LePage. Meet at the Community

12:00-12:30: Try it! French Canadian Dance Workshop
Join French Canadian step dancer and clogger Ann Whiting for a dance

12:30-1:15: Black Bear Moon Rhythm Ensemble
The lively rhythms and traditions of West Africa fill the stage with
this high-energy group of drummers and dancers. Main tent.

12:30-1:30: Cheswell Burying Ground Tour
Meet Wentworth Cheswell (1746–1817), one of Newmarket's founding
fathers. Of African-American ancestry, he served the town for more
than 50 years in many capacities, from selectman to assessor to
scrivener. Tour guide Rich Alperin, Newmarket Historical Society
president, lives on the site of the Cheswell family home. Meet at
Town Hall.
1:15-2:00: Martha Dana and her Puppets
Martha Dana and her giant puppets entertain with stories and song.

Join Newmarket residents Phonphet Bounphakhom and Margaret Crowley
for a demonstration of how to create traditional Laotian egg rolls.

Enjoy a guided walk through Newmarket's hard-working past—and its
developing future—with guide Mike Provost, a third-generation mill
worker. Meet at the Eagles building.
3:00-3:30: The Newmarket Olde Time Dancers
Festival debut! The Newmarket Olde Time Dancers, a group of
elementary school students and senior citizens, present an
intergenerational contra dancing demonstration, one of New England’s
great living traditions, accompanied by the music of Old New
England.

3:30-4:30: Balance and Swing Community Contra Dance
This traditional New England community contra dance opens with The
Newmarket Olde Time Dancers (see above). The dance continues, open
to all, accompanied by the foot-tappin’ music of Old New England
with Jane Orzechowski, fiddle; Deanna Stiles, flute; Sophie
Orzechoswski, piano; and Mary DesRosiers calling. No experience
necessary. Main tent.

4:30-5:00: Try it! Polka Workshop
Anybody can polka. All it takes is 15 minutes, according to Bob
Gazda, Newmarket native and polka instructor. Learn it here. Then
try it under the Main Tent to the music of King Ludwig and his
Bavarian band. Workshop tent.
5:00-7:00: Dinner and Dancing with King Ludwig’s Bavarian Band
They’re back! King Ludwig’s Bavarian Band returns with their
eight-foot alpine horns, yodeling, cow bells, and their favorite
jokes. Fun for all ages. Main tent.

5:00-7:00: Saturday Night Supper Sampler
"Eat out" at the Heritage Festival! Visit our vendors for a
selection of great eats. Then enjoy your supper—and the show—under

A theatrical journey of juggling, illusion, contortion and mime—plus
a giant floating cube, umbrellas, a vacuum, stepladders, toilet
plungers, peacock feathers…and more. Described by critics as a “mini
Cirque du Soleil,” Jody and Linda Scalise draw on the great
traditions of vaudeville (think Chaplin, Keaton, Gracie). They have
performed to standing ovations—and waves of laughter—around the
