NEWMARKET MAIN STREET CORPORATION SPEARHEADS HISTORIC ENGINE HOUSE STREETSCAPE BEAUTIFICATION FUND-RAISING EFFORT

NEWMARKET, NH—The Newmarket Main Street Corporation (NMSC), together with the Newmarket Hand Tub Association, is underway with a $15,000 fund-raising campaign for Phase II of the Engine House restoration project.

Phase I of the project ensures the completion of the essential structural deficiencies, while Phase II will complement this beautiful historic structure with appropriate functional amenities, including an historic streetscape design.

Once restored, Newmarket's Engine House will be one of the only surviving firehouse structures in New England to house an original fire-fighting hand tub in its original location. Also on display in the restored Engine House will be historic photos and paraphernalia telling the story of those who fought to protect their community from fire, as well as the buildings they saved.

Phase I of the Engine House project, which will cover the restoration project essentials, is being funded by a $40,000 project grant from the Land and Community Heritage Investment Program (LCHIP), matched by funding from the Town of Newmarket, the Newmarket Community Development Corporation (NCDC), and the NMSC itself. In addition to direct funding, in-kind labor from Charles Hoyt Design, Inc., was a key factor in securing funding for this project.
Phase II, which focuses on beautification of the immediate streetscape on and around the historic 1853 structure, will require approximately $15,000 of additional funding from individual donors, according to David LeGault, Engine House project leader from the NMSC.

The community has been very supportive throughout the initial stages of this important restoration project,≤ says LeGault. ≥Now that the essentials are well underway, we look forward to an even more successful campaign to put the finishing touches on this local landmark. We believe the restoration of the Engine House, along with the streetscape, will set the stage for similar efforts within the historic downtown district.≤
Donations of any amount will be recognized by the NMSC in its Heritage Festival program book (unless the donor wishes to remain anonymous). Individuals or corporations wishing to give $500 or more will be recognized on a plaque to be installed on/inside the Engine House itself.

Donations to support the Engine House project can be sent to the Newmarket Main Street Corporation, c/o Newmarket Town Hall, 186 Main Street, Newmarket, NH 03857. For additional information, please call Ranan Cohen, NMSC president (659-7154).
The Engine House project should be completed in time for the Heritage Festival (www.heritage-festival.org) on September 19, 20, 21, when the newly restored building will be open to the public for the first time.
