The waterfront features booths and boat rides, tours of the Edward H. Adams gundalow, and a tent with presentations and stories throughout the day.

SCENIC BOAT RIDES
Learn about the environmental history of the Lamprey River and Great Bay. Tours leave every half hour. Boats can take 10 passengers and admission is on a first come, first served basis. Please note: More tours may be offered later in the afternoon, depending on the tides. (Festival buttons are not required to board the boat.) Sponsored by the Newmarket Conservation Commission.
Saturday departure times: 9 am, 9:30 am, 10 am, 10:30 am, 11 am, 11:30 am, 12 noon, 12:30 am, 1 pm.

BOOTHS
Meet Newmarket's own prehistoric creature, the lamprey. Learn about fly fishing, the endangered species of Great Bay, Newmarket's open space. Discover the wonders of the Lamprey River and learn how to test the quality of the water. Plus bubble fun and Stories by the River for kids.

Films showing throughout the day include Great Bay: New Hampshire's Hidden Treasure, The Making of a Gundalow, River Story: The Lamprey through History, and the Newmarket Heritage Festival: Celebrating Community Past and Present.

High tide, Friday afternoon: Gundalow arrives
Watch as the Edward H. Adams gundalow comes up the Lamprey. Public landing.

SATURDAY, September 20
10 – 10:45 am: The Story of the Gundalow
Captain Justin Kane reveals the fascinating facts—plus a bit of fabulous fiction—about the flat-bottomed vessels that once traveled the waters of the Piscataqua region. www.gundalow.org

11:00 – 11:30 am: Newmarket's Prehistoric Creature
Expert Stacia Sower shares the life story of the lamprey, that little-known creature lurking in our river.

11:45 am – 12:30 pm: Cross-Grained and Wily Waters
Boat builder and writer Nick Brown presents a slide show about the special and fragile place known as the Piscataqua Region. (Based on the book Cross-Grained and Wily Waters, available at the Heritage Festival booth.)

12:45 – 1:15: Stories by the River I
Stories that reflect our heritage and diversity. Read by Newmarket resident Jan Galloway, fifth grade teacher at Lincoln Akerman School, Hampton Falls.

1:15 – 2:00 pm: Stories (and Sea Creatures) by the River II
Stories about the natural world—plus sea creatures to see and touch—read by Newmarket resident Marilyn Gilmour, program naturalist at the Seacoast Science Center and 2003 NH Environmental Educator of the Year. Waterfront tent.

2:00 – 2:45 pm: Rope Bracelet-Making workshop
Children ages 10 and up make a piece of history they can take home with gundalow captain Justin Kane.

3:00 – 3:30 pm: Newmarket’s Prehistoric Creature

Author/illustrator Jane Cowen-Fletcher reads aloud from her books, answers questions about the writing process, and signs her books.
