6th Annual Newmarket Heritage Festival

In the heart of historic downtown Newmarket, New Hampshire

Dance and sing! Laugh and learn! Eat and be merry! Once a year, the Heritage Festival gives Newmarket residents, old and new, a chance to come together and celebrate our richly textured past. Standing watch over the festivities, like silent sentinels, are the buildings that first shaped this town. The mills, where so many labored so hard, are tangible reminders that by working‹and celebrating--together it is possible to achieve a sense of community, a place of belonging. We hope you'll join us!

New this year: Board the gundalow, a replica of the historic vessels that sailed the Great Bay. Check out a model railway (S-gauge) complete with bells and whistles, smoke and diesel roar. Meet live baby lampreys and horseshoe crabs. Watch a boat builder, a fly-tier, and a waterfowl carver at work. Create a community quilt. Weave a tapestry. Learn an Irish dance. Sit down to a Sunday brunch featuring the harmonies of Labrys, along with the talents of Synchonicity, Newmarket's competition jump-rope team. Hear stories of life in the mills told by those who worked among the pounding of the looms. For details:. 2003 Schedule.* On the Waterfront. * Special Events

Back by popular demand: The Jumbo Circus Peanuts, The Funky Divas of Gospel, Gary Sredzienski on the accordion, The Youth Jazz Dance Orchestra, the Crawdad Wranglers Cajun Band, and King Ludwig's Bavarian Band all return to the Heritage Festival stage this year. A host of high-quality vendor booths offer great gifts, fine arts, and delicious food. Also back this year are historic walking tours, scenic boat rides, and three great community suppers: the International Soup and Chowder Fest (Friday), the Fireman's Supper (Saturday), and the Community Church Supper (Sunday).  2003 Schedule.

Fun for families: Laugh with Martha Dana and her amazing puppets. Sing with Sammie Haynes, who plays upbeat, foot-tappinπ tunes. Check out the model railway with engines that blow real smoke. Juggling and stiltwalking, yo-yos and unicycles‹watch and be amazed! And don't forget face painting and fish prints, live horseshoe crabs and fun with bubbles. Older kids can try the traditional arts of fly tying and rope bracelet making. Children's activities

Special events: The newly restored Newmarket Engine House, which celebrates its 150th anniversary this year will be open to the public for the first time during the festival. Read more
